Antony Price, Famed for Designing for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer behind a series of unforgettable images associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, such as the light-hued ensembles that appeared in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."
This news arrives just weeks after he unveiled his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "dress" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Lasting Legacy
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to blend menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in crafting body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "true original," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.
By the 1990s, he started creating ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as several ensembles for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.
With a vocation that covered half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in collaboration with the design house 16Arlington.
- Architectural Forms: The core of his aesthetic.
- Dramatic Impact: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
- Genre-Blending Design: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
- Clients from Stage to Palace: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.
The industry mourns the loss to a authentic original whose impact on the visual landscape of music remains indelibly etched.
