There are numerous contenders to claim the designation as “world’s greatest innovation.” The wheel. The movable type. The steam engine.
According to a new book, however, that title should go to a automated timber mill conceived through Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.
“Prior to automated sawing, building a modest trading ship required approximately ten sawyers working over three months,” writes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-driven sawmills, an identical amount of processed timber could be manufactured within seven days.”
Owing to this rapid mechanical saw, that turned logs to boards with almost no human effort, the Dutch could build vessels more quickly than anyone else, which unleashed a century of Netherlands naval, economic and cultural supremacy in the continent and the world.

Corneliszoon’s sawmill, contends Dávila, was “mankind’s initial authentic factory apparatus.” A wind turbine turned a wheel. One component converted its circular motion to up-and-down motion to power the saw. Another component transformed that same rotary motion into a sideway’s movement advancing the timber to the cutter. A ratchet system shifted the log ahead a measured step per stroke.
“Each element was modest on its own. Corneliszoon’s brilliance lay in how to integrate them in order that the machine acted in a precisely synchronized sequence, cutting on every descending motion and moving on every upward motion. It was a remarkably intelligent application of basic parts.”
