Extreme heat and intense wildfires have devastated the dry landscape of Western Australia. With temperatures forecast to continue climbing above 40C (104F) over the next few days, a major heatwave warning has been declared across a large portion of the south-west.

This situation come after recent bushfires in New South Wales, which caused the loss of properties and loss of life. Intense heatwave warnings have also been activated for the coming days in parts of SA and New South Wales, as a system of atmospheric pressure shifts to the east, bringing blazing heat to a broad swath of the region.

The mix of tinder-dry vegetation and relentless high temperatures creates a volatile situation for emergency crews.

Worldwide Climatic Events Cause Disruption

Elsewhere, a metropolis was plunged into blackout last week after powerful winds damaged the urban electrical network, with falling trees bringing down electricity cables. The stormy weather also caused major travel disruption at a major airport, where numerous air services were grounded. Substantial impact on power systems is expected to cause ongoing problems as service providers work urgently to restore power to more than 1 million inhabitants.

Unusual Fog Covers Typically Clear Area

At the same time, a region famed for its clear skies and abundant sunshine has experienced one of its dullest and most overcast weeks on recorded history. A particular form of low cloud, which typically lasts for only a few days, has been unusually extensive and persistent this year, holding temperatures at a key transport hub under 8C for over a week – the longest such streak in more than three decades. The prolonged haze has been driven by unprecedented autumn precipitation that left soils waterlogged.
