European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says
The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
