Eurovision Was Once a Campy Joy – Yet It Has Become a Calculated Tool to Sanitize Conflict.
A recent initialism came to light several months after the start of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Labeled WCNSF, it signifies “Child casualty without any family left”. This designation is unique to Gaza, according to health professionals such as child health specialists. Normally, it is unusual for physicians to care for a minor who has lost their entire family. However, there has been no semblance of normality about the devastating conflict in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been eradicated and the number of children who have lost limbs exceeds that of any other place in the world. Nothing normal in numerous doctors arriving back from a devastated terrain with accounts of children being intentionally shot at.
A Hell on Earth In Spite Of a Supposed Ceasefire
Gaza remains a profound humanitarian disaster. Essential medical supplies are not getting in those in need, and groups like Amnesty International have stated that violations are continuing. Authorities rejects these claims, just as it denies all charges it is implicated in. Yet as grieving children who lost parents are now freezing in makeshift tent camps, there is a little heartwarming news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from continuing with its declared purpose of “unity and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to roll out a blood-red carpet for Israel, although at least four European countries have now pulled out in protest. And this, apparently, is what global togetherness resembles.
Eurovision, of course prohibited Russia from taking part in 2022 due to the “grave situation in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza appears to be treated differently.
A Double Standard
Forget the fact that Israel was criticized for questionable voting tactics last year in what could be seen as an effort to inject politics into Eurovision. Forget the fact that a three-year-old girl was reportedly killed in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Pay no mind to the evidence that attacks by settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have escalated. Overlook the situation that foreign reporters are still denied freely reporting in Gaza. None of this, it would seem, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.
The Show Goes On While Ignoring Staggering Tragedy
The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – roughly two times the current lifespan of someone in Gaza at present. The broadcast will air, but it will never be able to restore the camp joy it once represented. An institution that was originally built on togetherness has now become a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
