The Gunners' boss feels assured that his squad can persist in handling with injury setbacks following disclosing that star striker Kai Havertz will not return for several more weeks.

Extended Absence for German Star

The Germany international has been out since August after undergoing an operation on his knee. Hoped to return earlier in December, Arteta revealed the player faced a hurdle when stepping up his rehabilitation and was unable to move forward “to the next level.”

“We took lessons, and managed to assemble a group that is considerably steadier and has increased versatility,” commented Arteta.

Selection Dilemma for Brentford Clash

This news presents a dilemma for Wednesday’s match against Brentford. Arteta must choose between continuing to use Mikel Merino, who found the net as a makeshift striker on Sunday, or reinstating Viktor Gyökeres, who came back after a fitness issue off the bench. Veteran striker Gabriel Jesus is available after 11 months out.

Fitness Doubts Linger

More doubts affect centre-back William Saliba and winger Leandro Trossard, who were absent for the Chelsea match. As a result, summer signings Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are expected to keep their places in the backline for the Premier League front-runners.

Arteta believes the significant outlay on reinforcements during the summer has placed the club in a much stronger position to handle such unavailability.

Questioned if a larger pool of players was benefiting their championship push, his response was positive. “Absolutely, because this season has been worse in some areas, and now the situation with the defence,” he added.

“History has shown us that we must deploy players in alternative spots, and they need to be prepared to fulfil different roles if we are to fight at this level. And the example of Mikel Merino.”

Arteta's Support for Suffering Havertz

Commenting on the setback noted by Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann, Arteta offered more insight. “He followed all protocols. He was unable to progress to the next level and now the signs are like we have overcome that hurdle.”

The manager conveyed his eagerness to have him back. “Everyone is eager to have him. Truly, Havertz is someone that, personally, I love so much for what he brings to the team, but his personality, his personality. I watch him struggle on the sidelines.”
