New York Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during a recent discussion.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”

It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he is reported as serious yet stable.

“Still unsure,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”

NYPD released surveillance images earlier this week of a man sought in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries were reported.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday in the area between the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since the news broke. The coach said that Boyd and his wife just had a newborn.

“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd did not participate during the current season, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with a shoulder injury that required surgery.

He joined the Jets as a free agent in March and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on August 2 and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while working his way back.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He is completely involved. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He signed with Arizona in last year and later was with the Texans later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract for $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
