No fewer than 13 people lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the year before. This project was a hallmark of his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The development of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a notable increase of its role in national infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated speed, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled significant apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party demanded an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This halt was proposed pending a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."

In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and management of these national undertakings.
