Russian President Vladimir Putin Vows Uninterrupted Energy Deliveries to the Indian Nation in Rebuff of Washington Pressure
During a clear message to the United States, Leader Vladimir Putin stated to Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Russia stands ready to provide “uninterrupted” shipments of energy resources to India. The announcement came when Putin and Modi met in the Indian capital and affirmed their bilateral ties were “resistant to external pressure.”
A Message Aimed at the West
Putin's comments, issued after the annual summit, appeared to be a pointed rebuke at western countries, which have sought to pressure New Delhi into curtailing its close links with Moscow. The context is in response to previous Washington's moves, notably additional tariffs on India due to its acquisition of Moscow's energy exports.
“Moscow remains a reliable supplier of energy resources and all necessary for the advancement of India’s energy sector,” he stated. “We are ready to persist in ensuring the consistent delivery of resources for the fast-expanding Indian economy.”
The Indian leader, without referencing crude directly, reinforced the theme by saying that “energy security has been a strong and important pillar of the India-Russia alliance.”
Defying US Interference
In the lead-up to the meeting, during a media interview, Putin had questioned American pressure over India's oil imports. He argued, “If the US can claim the privilege to buy our uranium, then why can't India enjoy the same privilege?”
This trip marked his first journey to India after the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, and Moscow and Delhi engaged in a clear effort to project that the friendship between the heads of state remained intact.
An Unusual Welcome
Taking an notable step, Prime Minister Modi personally greeted Putin as he disembarked. Both leaders exchanged a hearty embrace akin to longtime companions before enjoying a closed-door supper the night before the summit.
The Indian prime minister later described India's relationship with Russia as “a guiding star” and added it was “based on shared respect and deep trust.”
Reaffirming Strategic Partnerships
Friday's talks yielded multiple significant pacts regarding defence and economic cooperation. One significant result was the signing of an economic cooperation programme aimed at 2030, which targets to increase twofold bilateral trade to $100bn per year by the target year.
Furthermore vowed to restructure their defence ties. Although Russia continues to be India's largest supplier of defence equipment, the volume has reduced over the past decade as India aims to widen its supply base.
The official release highlighted cooperation in the collaborative manufacturing of cutting-edge defence platforms, though explicit reference of purchases such as the fifth-generation aircraft were not made.
Ultimately, both nations reiterated that amid the “ongoing challenging, strained, and uncertain global landscape, Russian-Indian ties remain resilient to outside forces.”
