NYC's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from the rent-stabilised apartment that became a focal point throughout his campaign.

A Traditional Abode

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors since the World War II era.

However, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a central platform, hesitated to declare he would live there immediately following his victory in November.

"The choice came down to our family's safety and the need to focusing my full attention on carrying out the platform on affordability voters supported," the Mayor-Elect declared on Monday.

A Fond Farewell

Mamdani lived in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community known for its diverse immigrant communities and global cuisine.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for exemplifying the true spirit of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, it will always live inside me and the work I do," he added.

Political Debate

In his election campaign, Mamdani tied his key pledge – to freeze the rent – to his personal living arrangements.

However his rivals, including former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the affordable housing even though he hails from a well-known family.

A House Not Always Used

Not all mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, kept his residence in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg felt it could serve as a venue for civic gatherings, and championed an extensive renovation of the older mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion near his swearing-in on 1 January, he will experience a setting far removed from his modest Astoria home.

Adorned in cream-colored walls, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure situated by the East River.

Within, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished to reflect the home's original era.

The property, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also has fortified protections to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of former mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors would sometimes open and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "No matter what people claim," he declared in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, a policy where the city regulates on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.

Tenants see such units as crucial resources as the price of rent rises faster than the means of many residents.

Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the property website Zillow, the median rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
