The Young Spinner Makes Unexpected Inclusion in English Ashes Squad
England have chosen a 12-man selection just two days before the first Ashes Test, with Shoaib Bashir securing a surprise place.
Bashir's selection suggests that the visiting team will wait until the morning of the first Test to decide whether Perth Stadium pitch suit a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spinner.
Both pace bowlers are included in the 12-man squad, showing there are no concerns about their fast bowler's condition.
The other seamers round out the bowling group, with the latter most likely to be omitted if Bashir enters the final team.
Ground Conditions Favor Pace Bowlers
Brendon McCullum had been anticipated to choose an all-seam attack on a venue that has staged several past matches.
In those matches, the majority of dismissals have been taken by seamers, with only a small number to spin.
Of those 40 wickets, the veteran spinner has claimed 29, while all visiting spinners combined have only eight.
At a venue known for its speed and carry, and whose curator, the pitch preparer, stated that these characteristics are “permanent and not going to change,” a side loaded with seamers is still the more likely choice.
Alternative Choices Weighed
There had been rumors that Will Jacks could be parachuted into the side to offer some spin while additionally strengthening the batting lineup.
However the coach has opted to stick with the young spinner, having said earlier this year that he would be his first-choice slow bowler for the series.
Earlier, Lyon commented on Bashir as “OK,” adding that “in my eyes, the experienced spinner is still England’s top slow bowler.”
“It is a massive role, and it can be a massive challenge for bowlers who lack experience in the previous in Australian pitches,” Lyon said of spin bowling in Australian Tests.
“I won't let my secrets out so opponents come out and perform well out here.”
