A extensive rescue and recovery mission is actively in progress in the Caribbean waters for a duo of lost boats transporting relief goods en route from the Mexican coast to Cuba.

Naval Rescue Missions Deployed

The Mexican government has sent navy personnel and search planes to locate the two vessels, which were transporting no fewer than nine total sailors, per a official statement.

The vessels had been projected to make landfall in Cuba's capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and zero verification of their safe arrival, the statement clarified.

Context of Relief to the Island

The island nation has depended significantly on aid convoys from Mexico over recent weeks, as the island struggles through repeated national electricity failures.

"Both crews and captains are veteran seafarers, and both vessels are equipped with appropriate safety systems and signalling equipment," an official associated with the mission stated.

The nine-person crew are nationals of France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexican authorities said it has opened communications with rescue coordination centers from each country along with their consular staff.

"Our team is co-operating fully with the authorities and are still optimistic in the crews' ability to safely arrive in Havana," the spokesperson added.

Earlier Humanitarian Shipment

Previously that week, the Cuban government warmly welcomed and officially received another boat that had transported 14 tons of humanitarian aid to the country.

That boat, nicknamed "a modern Granma" after the yacht in which Castro came back to Cuba to start the armed struggle in the 1950s, delivered solar equipment, pharmaceuticals, baby formula, cycles and foodstuffs.

Broader Political Backdrop

Charity groups and individuals have primarily led initiatives to ship critical assistance to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, coinciding with the time a fuel embargo on the Communist-run nation came into effect.

The United Nations have since warned of ""severe" supply shortages, with over fifty thousand surgeries called off in Cuba due to power shortages.

Foreign policy tensions have intensified lately, with remarks from several representatives underscoring the complicated situation regarding relations.

In response to certain proposals, a prominent government figure declared that "the socialist system of Cuba is non-negotiable."

Reports suggest that preliminary steps of negotiations commenced, although their ongoing development remains uncertain.

The Mexican navy stated it was pledged to using the full extent of its capabilities at its reach to find the vessels and ensure the well-being of the sailors.

As of now, there has been silence on the missing boats by the Cuban government.
