UK, UN and EU Decry a ‘Gross Injustice’ of Jimmy Lai’s Lengthy Jail Sentence.

The sentencing of media publisher and British citizen Jimmy Lai to 20 years in prison in Hong Kong has sparked international condemnation. Advocacy bodies and multiple governments have described the national security convictions influenced by political considerations.

Widespread Disapproval and Demands for Freedom

Britain's top diplomat Yvette Cooper declared that the lengthy imprisonment constitutes a prison term lasting the rest of his natural life. She labeled the legal case as having political underpinnings pursuant to legislation aimed at quieting those who speak out against China. She urged Hong Kong's authorities to terminate his suffering and free him to his family.

“This outcome highlights how the vague and overly broad provisions of Hong Kong’s national security legislation are subject to interpretation in contravention of universal rights standards,” stated the UN rights chief Volker Türk.

An EU spokesperson, Anitta Hipper, said the bloc “deeply regrets” the result of the lengthy trial and pushed for his swift liberation without preconditions.

Background of the Case

Jimmy Lai, the creator behind the now-shuttered Apple Daily tabloid, was arrested in 2020 the enactment of a controversial national security law in Hong Kong. The law was introduced by Chinese authorities following months of pro-democracy protests endorsed by his publication.

He was sentenced on allegations encompassing conspiracy to produce seditious material and plotting to collaborate with external actors. The latter charges were based on the controversial security law.

Family Concerns

The activist's child, Sebastien, shared that his father fears dying alone apart from his relatives. His international counsel described him the “world’s highest profile detainee” behind bars at present.

Sebastien Lai commented that while the verdict was anticipated, its announcement felt worse than imagined, though it brought some “solace” that the legal proceedings had concluded.

International Ramifications

The sentencing has influenced UK-China relations. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer claimed to have mentioned Lai’s case during a meeting with President Xi Jinping earlier this year. However, visible progress in securing his freedom remains unclear.

Sebastien Lai asked the value of enhanced diplomatic ties while his father remains imprisoned, remarking it felt “a bit tone deaf.”

Official Responses

Conversely, the Hong Kong and Chinese authorities endorsed the court's decision. Hong Kong’s leader John Lee claimed the ruling demonstrated that “law and order is maintained.”

The mouthpiece of China’s foreign ministry, Lin Jian, labeled Lai the “primary instigator” behind previous protests and maintained the legal case had been “justified and legal.” He urged other nations to refrain from intervention in China’s internal affairs.

A Representative Verdict

Press rights groups have described Lai as a symbol of diminishing media freedom in Hong Kong. The organization's director general said it was a “somber occasion for those who value a free press.”

With a near 100% success rate in prosecuting security-related crimes, Lai’s severe sentence is seen as the toughest yet delivered under the security statute.
