Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has secured a wild-card entry for the first Grand Slam of the year, which kicks off on January 18 in Melbourne.

Historic Return to Melbourne Park

The event organizers announced on Friday that the 45-year-old icon will make a return at Melbourne Park a staggering 28 years after her debut. During 1998, she overcame her younger sister Serena in the second round before bowing out in the quarter-finals to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Summer Swing

Venus had previously revealed in the month of November her plans to compete in Auckland, New Zealand, where she also received a wild card, two weeks before the Melbourne event. The Australian Open noted that Williams is also entered to play a tournament in Hobart, Australia a week later, just before the start of play at the main venue.

Her most recent visit in Melbourne was in 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the singles competition on two separate instances, falling short against Serena in the championship matches of 2003 as well as 2017.

"I am thrilled to be back in Australia and eagerly anticipating competing during the Australian summer," Williams stated. "I have experienced so many unforgettable moments there, and I’m grateful for the chance to return to a venue that has meant so much to my professional journey."

Williams' career statistics at the Australian Open stands at an notable 54 wins and 21 losses. The upcoming edition will represent the twenty-second occasion she has appeared in the main draw.

Setting a New Record

The tournament pointed out that Williams is set to become the most senior female player to compete in an Open's main draw, eclipsing the record previously held by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she was defeated in the opening round at the venue in 2015.
