The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Players will gain the option to question specific rulings from the chair umpire, mirroring the system currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This step follows just a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific situations, including:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Possible interference end of a point.
Importantly, there is no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.
Practical Application
An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
This technology are not new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.
Other Changes
A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
